Hello friends! I know it has been a while since you have heard from me! I have taken a little break from blogging because I have been trying to focus on a few other things in my life. It has been good for me. I have needed to simplify my routine and make some healthy changes. So with that, came getting rid of some extra responsibilities and clearing both my schedule and mind of clutter.
Super personal tidbit warning!! Feel free to scroll down to the video and bypass if you just want to learn a simple way to highlight and contour!
When I was prego with Scarlett, I gained 38 pounds. Not to mention, I wasn’t at my fittest when I got pregnant. During the first trimester I was nauseous the whole time and the only thing that helped was eating something pretty much on the hour: peanut butter sandwich crackers were my BFF. I thought with breastfeeding, and eating “normal” I would be able to drop most of the weight. It turns out–that didn’t work for me. This isn’t just about a number on a scale to me; it’s about making a lifestyle change, becoming more active, and putting better fuel into my body. I am still not there, I make mistakes all the time. But I am happy to report that I have lost 15 pounds in the two months since we shot this video, I am working out regularly and feel like I have way more energy!
With all this being said, this video was a major push for me to get my health back in order. I knew that I needed to make some adjustments, and I had already put quite a few in place. But, when I saw some of the images from this shoot, I couldn’t believe my eyes. It’s a rude awakening to see yourself on camera and feel like you got hit in the gut: I look like that?! I didn’t want anyone to see me in this video! After a few days when I had a chance to sort out my feelings I decided that I am not defined by how I look. I’m just not! There is more to me then that. I’m a wife, a mother, a friend, and a daughter of God and that can’t be measured by my level of fitness or a svelte jawline. We all care to a certain extent about what we look like, and that’s okay. We should take care of ourselves, and it’s okay to want to feel beautiful. Beauty should be fun, I love to play with makeup and colors and textures. I love to put together different looks, and try new products out. But we can’t spend these priceless moments we have here on earth obsessing over it! There just isn’t the time, it is too precious and we are worth so much more. Personal rant over.
I am super excited to share with y’all a video in a series of back to basics: makeup for everyday. We partnered with Elyse from Six Sisters Stuff (who is absolutely stunning and radiates inner beauty too!) in this episode where I showed her how to highlight and contour (HAC) her face. There’s a lot of highlighting and contouring tutorials out there; it it somewhat of a “thing” now. A lot of people ask me about it and I’m here to say that unless your a model on a shoot or a Kardashian you probably want to do this very subtly. Don’t get too technical or serious about it. This should be simple, quick, and easy. If you have any questions or want to request a tutorial on a certain topic, please leave a comment below!
The products and brushes I used on Elyse, I also included more affordable options because I used really expensive products on her face.
I also like Sonia Kashuk brushes at Target for the powder/ bronzer and contour brushes.
